New Yorkers are not used to tornados.
One zipped through our area this week uprooting trees, lifting off roofs; causing downed wires, blocked roads, and a pretty wild night. We were in church when it happened. A good place to be. Thankfully, the building is old and solidly built. We watched the torrents of rain, lighting and winds through the huge windows of the church. What a show! Conflicting emotions- excitement, fear, unease, wonder at the force of the winds from the storm. Though it was a bit scary, deep in my heart I knew we were safe and in the Lord’s care. No one realized how bad it was till it was over. (including the weather service and news reports who predicted a bad storm with high winds) The actual tornado hit just blocks away from our church and swept a long path several miles up Rte. 159. We were spared.
It took us awhile to get home that evening as so many roads and streets were blocked off. Emergency vehicles everywhere. We had to turn around from at least six different routes to find our way home. But we prayed and God led us and we arrived safely – with no damage to our house which is surrounded by huge trees! I had prayed that morning (as I do daily) for God’s protection over us, our cars and our property. God hears our prayers. We lost power for about 24 hours.
Have you ever been through a traumatic weather event? What did you feel? Record those emotions so you don’t forget and you may use them someday in one of your stories : )
Praying for those who were affected by the storm, no serious injuries, thank God. The day ended with God’s promise: a huge rainbow.
Hi Cynthia,
I’m sorry you had to go through that. I live in Brooklyn and we had a tornado go directly over our house in 2011. I’ll never forget the sight of that green sky.
I have to admit, being a NYer, I didn’t ever expect to have to deal with a tornado, but I never look at a storm sky the same since.
Actually, one of the local churches has a cross torn off its steeple during that storm. It landed on a car a block away.
Glad you were safe inside the church.

Mary,
I agree, as New Yorkers we don’t expect a tornado to come through! We were so thankful that our home was safe and that no trees came down. We saw so much damage on the ride home. When we finally pulled into our driveway and saw everything intact, it caused much rejoicing : )

Vonda,
Thanking God daily for His divine protection. Oh, my friend, we missed you, too! Let us know if you’re anywhere near NY this year. And don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from me, I don’t know if I can make it through another year without talking with you!

What an awful experience for you, Cynthia. As a native born Texas, I’m used to tornadoes, but being used to them & living through one are 2 different things. Glad you’re okay. I remember one we had in Dallas when I was in high school. I sat calmly eating an after-school snack, thinking where is that train I hear coming from, all the while my Dad was frantic because he couldn’t get thru to see how Mom & I were & he heard our additions was wiped out. Nope, just a block away. Scary.

Janet,
The scary part was no one realized it was an actual tornado till afterwards. It was less than 2 miles from our house which is way too close! We were so fortunate there were no fatalities from it. One guy did get picked up by it and battered around, blacked out. He looked pretty beat up but is recovering well. After seeing so much damage coming home from church, we were so relieved and thankful to pull into our driveway and find our home and property intact! God is faithful, we are blessed.

Tornadoes. I’ve lived in Oklahoma all my life so being tornado-aware was drilled into me at a very young age. I’ve been close to a couple in my lifetime and that was way too close for me. My heart certainly grieves for all those here in OK who lost loved ones and possessions in the past two weeks due to massive tornadoes and high winds and even unexpected floods! I live in western OK so we were spared the worst of the storms, but even high winds of 70+ and large hail brought its own damages. Cynthia, I am thankful that you were spared from the recent storm. The damage from a tornado is unbelievable!

Anita,
So good to hear from you and thankful you haven’t been hit by the recent tornados. Yes, the damage can be horrific. I’m sure what we saw here was minor compared to OK and other places. It is just so weird to have this happen in NY, so unexpected. Grateful for God’s protection and praying for those in OK.

My husband and I huddled in our den the night hurricane Ike moved over Houston. We did a lot of praying. Copper, our greyhound, slept through the whole thing. Now, that’s faith!
