Riding around beautiful Sacandaga Lake today in upstate NY to visit some friends. Remembering my family renting camps and cabins here so many years ago when we were young. I tried to locate one of our cabins along the lake marked off by a huge white boulder with “Whispering Pines” written across it in heavy black paint. No such luck. The cabin is probably long gone due to new development along the lakefront.
However, we did find the Old Country Store, right at the edge of the bridge. Of course we had to stop and look it over. Things were different but the outside looked much the same. I was thrilled it was still there. Such memories!
- As a child, coming in sunburnt and happy from swimming in the lake.
- My sister and I just about reaching the height of the counters, facing the difficult decision of which old fashioned candy to choose from the large glass containers.
- Driving around with Mom and Dad in the old fin-tailed Cadillac with our wet hair flying in the breeze.
Do you have special summer memories?
Any old landmarks that are still there? Please share in a comment!
Cynthia,
I’m so glad you shared this post on the loop. I made an Adirondack trip in April and this scene looks familiar. I think I drove past the store. The entire area is beautiful.
We used to camp at Fair Haven in Upstate NY and I can still hear the seagulls, remember the camping loop, the dock…
Thanks for the memories!

Julie,
Glad I can share the pic with someone who recognizes it! Yes, it is a beautiful area. I haven’t been that far around Sacandaga in awhile and always forget how big that lake is…
Where is Fair Haven NY?

Of my childhood landmarks there are two that I cherish the most. Tallmadge, Ohio was a village in my youth and a large circle dominated its heart. The circle, with a circumference of 1/2 mile, held the town hall and Congregational Church, (built about 1836), plus dozens of beautiful elm trees and picturesque sidewalks. These two structures not only held hundreds of events but also decades of stories.
The town hall housed the police station on the first floor, plus the mayor and town offices. A stage and small auditorium dominated the second floor for special productions and dances.
Most of the original founding fathers attended the church. All Baccalaureate services for our high school were held there, including mine.
Both builders are now museums, but my graduating class of 1953 will hold its 60th class reunion in the town hall this year. We’re still using the buildings along with many weddings held at the church. Two fantastic landmarks for the thousands of native residents of Tallmadge. Quite a joy.

Dorothy,
Thanks for sharing such great memories. Wonderful that they are still able to use the buildings for some events. Sounds like a great setting for a story : )

Cynthia, I wish I had photos of those memories and special places my mind
holds dear. I’ve always liked country school houses. Although raised in the
college town of Michigan State University, both sets of grandparents and cousins
lived in the thumb area, in small towns of Michigan. We’d see a lot of old country
schools when taking rides around the area, and I loved those trips. My grand-
mother pointed on many occasions, to the little school house she’d walk to from
her home until she was ten and moved into town. I loved to walk around with
her. We didn’t go far…but just standing at the door-way I could visualize an old
teachers desk, and where the children sat. Outside an out-house was still visible
and the remains of a swing. The old bell was above the school, and Grandma tried to buy it, but someone got to it first. Those rides and the back country roads held a lot of history, and I’m so glad I didn’t have a cell phone to interrupt what I’ll remember and treasure from my grandmother’s years of living.

Diane,
Country schoolhouses have their own type of charm and appeal – hard to imagine growing up that way. Sounds like you have some interesting stories to record from your grandmothers memories. Thanks for sharing!
