A WORD – “Genre.”
-
A literary genre is a category of literary composition. Genres may be determined by literary technique, tone, content, or even (as in the case of fiction) length.
I am happy to report Christian Fiction now covers a wide range of “genres.” If you check in your local library, Christian Fiction may include any of the following: Mystery, Suspense, Romance, Woman’s Fiction, Speculative, Sci-Fi, Historical, Contemporary, Biblical, Western or Amish.
What style do you prefer to read? Favorite authors? Is there another category you can think of? I enjoy Contemporary, Woman’s Fiction, and Historicals. But often read from other genres if I like the author enough. My writing is Contemporary or WF, which is one of the hardest genres to break in to as a newbie! WIP is a romance..what about you?
Enter a comment listing your favorites to be included in a drawing for a signed Amish novel, “The Postcard” by Beverly Lewis.
Well, there are several of authors I love, and I love more than one genre. The most important thing to me is it needs to be well written, covering all that entails to create an amazing story. You can check out my blog for a list of favorite authors, or see my reviews on Amazon or Goodreads to get an idea. Though I can say my all time favorite stories include a cowboy, no matter the genre.
Blessings,
Kym

Kym,
If you love cowboy stories, have you read Mary Connealy? She was visiting in our local area a while ago, such a fun lady! Thanks for stopping by and I will check out your blog for more suggestions…

I’m an avid reader. I’ll read just about anything that isn’t offensive or violent. I’m not a big romance fan but I have read some that I like, particularly romantic suspense. That kind of puts me at odds with most women I know.
I love historical novels and I read a fair amount of nonfiction. But my favorite is suspense and anything that keeps me page-turning as fast as I can. DiAnn Mills is great at that. Steven James is excellent. Do NOT start one of his in the evening! I’m a James Patterson fan and several other authors.
As for me, I write Bible studies – about as far from suspense as you can get.

Sherry,
Now that’s a thought…a Bible Study filled with suspense! Have you taken classes with DiAnn at Blue Ridge? She is an awesome teacher and so helpful…

My first visit here, Cynthia. Beautiful design. I write contemporary romance for Love Inspired, but pitched a historical idea at the wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference you blogged about.
As for reading, I’ve always said historical romance and historical novels are my favorite, but lately I’ve been caught up in some contemporary series. And I’ve been reading Love Inspired Suspense, although mystery and suspense isn’t usually my read of choice.

I read lots of different genres, but probably inspirational women’s fiction is my favorite. It’s also what I write. I read historical but only write contemporary. Favorite authors? Oh, so many. I love Angela Hunt, Blanche Day Manos, & Linda Goodnight. I shouldn’t have started. There’s not room to list more. Thanks. Cynthia. I like the post. isn’t it wonderful we can find everything written with a Christian worldview?

Janet,
Yes, it is wonderful we have so many choices now in Christian Fiction. I remember years ago I used to buy old novels at book sales because they were “clean reads.” Now I just raid the local Christian bookstore : ) Thanks for sharing your favs and also the authors.

When I saw this email from Topics From Christian Book Giveaways I was startled since your name is the same as our former CPA in Flagstaff, Arizona! And I thought it can’t be the same lady and of course it is not!
But to be on topic, I like so many types of books, mystery, romance(Christian), adventure, suspense. Everything from John Grisham to many Amish fiction writers, including Beverly Lewis, Wanda Brunstetter. Melissa Tagg is a new one that I like too. Tracie Petersen, Francine Rivers. I enjoy so many writers, too many to list, I am discovering as I write here!

Hi Sally,
No, never been to Arizona! That’s funny because its not really a common name. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your favorite authors. I agree, there are so many to choose from but that is actually a good problem : ) Gayle Roper has an Amish series out that is really good, not the typical Amish story. You might enjoy that series.

Deanne,
Isn’t it terrific that there are so many “clean reads” out now? So many books, so little time! If you enjoy Amish fiction, I will be doing other giveaways in the coming months. Beverly Lewis was in our area (and I was out of town!) but a friend took a bunch of my books and had them signed. So…there will be others to give away soon : )

I read many genres of Christian Fiction, I even review some. I do like Amish or Mennonite books, but also love some suspense. Kim Vogel Sawyer is my favorite author, I guess cause I know her personally, but would still love her books best anyway.
