IN MY WORDS – No more DIY projects! I make this promise to myself every time I tackle a new project and encounter every difficulty possible for the simple done-in-a-day idea. Liars. False advertising at its strongest level.
It’s never done in a day and its always more complicated than they promise. Yet I still fall for it and find myself paint splattered, tired and worn. Downright cranky. The latest episode was painting a dark wood kitchen hutch. We’re had it for ages but it was always too dark for our bright blue and white kitchen. After looking at countless sales and flea markets for a hutch that would work, I finally decided to dive in and just paint the thing white. “Antique Lace” if you want to be specific. Except it first had to have a grey primer on it to cover the dark wood.
Sure. Never did realize all the nooks and crannies in this piece of furniture. So on to the lacy paint color. Hmm…doesn’t look good. Kinda’ like a really shabby shabby not so chic. Yes, it will take two coats. After two days of hard work and bending and twisting and realizing I’m getting too old to sit Indian-style for any length of time, it is done. Finished. (above photo) I’m exhausted and I somehow managed to get grey paint in my hair. Grey, really?? Couldn’t it have been a blonde highlight color? I down some Advil, manage to sleep away some of the aches and pains and return to the kitchen several times a day to admire my new finished piece. Yes, I like it much better. But please remind me next time to just go out and buy a new piece of furniture….

Cyndy, I wished I had known what you were up to because I could have recommended a great product, Annie Sloan chalk paint. No priming just wipe down the piece to get the dust off. It dries in 20 minutes and then you do a second coat if needed. You brush a wax on and wipe it down and your done. I’ve already done 5 pieces of furniture. Of course it’s work like anything you do but it’s a little easier and the paint dries quickly. By the way the hutch looks gorgeous!!!! I love blue dishes and I love the color of the hutch. GOOD JOB!!!!

I’ll keep that in mind if there is ever a “next time!” We did talk to a friend who owns a store and does this all the time. She gave us some good advice and I’m pleased with how it turned out. I think there is no way around the fact that it is still a “project” and will take time and effort.

Cyndy, it does look great.
Sorry that this beautiful end didn’t erase the hard work, aches and pains you put into it.
I’m ready to do the same “error” we don’t learn from others mistake, do we?
Although Daniel disagree with my project to change that dark cabinet into a beautiful “springy” look for the new house.
I see in my mind and heart, the décor of the kitchen and living room “Country Chic”, not Rustic.

It took some time to convince Dwayne that it would look better. He didn’t want to wreck the “antique” look of it. But he’s happy with it now and it really brightens things up even more. So maybe Dan will be talked into it : ) Just leave yourself plenty of time to work on it with enough breaks in between…
