Any One-Handed Hints?

IN MY WORDS – As a writer and a musician I value the use of my hands.

Have you ever had a broken wrist or broken hand?

Any suggestions on therapy after the cast is removed?

It is interesting to discover the most simple things can become difficult. Putting toothpaste on a toothbrush, squeezing shampoo out of the container, opening a bottle of much-needed ibuprofin…!

Any funny stories to make us laugh on how you managed one-handed?

  1. When I was still doing computing system development, heavy programming with heavy keyboarding, I broke my wrist. Fortunately, the cast was adjustable, using Velcro. So, I would loosen the cast, type a little, and then rest my wrist. I could still work a little while I healed.

  2. Harry,
Thanks for the advice. I’m still in a hard cast but looking forward to graduating to a soft cast soon. Will be very happy to have two hands again on the keyboard, this five finger typing is truly slowing things down!

  3. I can’t think of any tips beyond what therapy teaches but I broke my right wrist. I had a cast for 12 weeks before learning it was healing wrong and I needed surgery. It was a long process.
I can feel weather changes with the hardware, but overall, all is normal.

  5. Rubbermaid shelf liner can be use to hold things – like your dinner plate, a mixing bowl, or a jar. Use a pump dispenser for shampoo. Toothpaste with a flip-top is easier. You need to see an occupational therapist who specializes in hands for outpatient therapy. Get well soon!

  6. Cathy,
Thank you for the hints! I like the shelf liner idea, didn’t think of that one. And yes, a pump dispenser is easier but haven’t found it in my type of shampoo yet. Maybe its time to switch ( :
