A Character Sketch – Buggy

A Word: Bug – to annoy, pester

Oh no, here they come again.

You contemplate turning the corner to run and hide but too late…they’ve spotted you.

It’s the person you silently term “Buggy” because they always leave that impression whenever they come around. They ask questions persistently that you are unable to answer. They talk endlessly with no regard to your time or what work you are involved in at the moment. They take twenty minutes to explain something that could have been summed up in 3 sentences. Completely oblivious to hints that you need to get going. You don’t want to be mean but they don’t understand kindness. They turn downright rude if you try to interrupt or excuse yourself.

Bringing you to the image of picking up a fly swatter and just….SWAT! Not that you want to destroy them, just to silence the incessant buzzing.

Do you know a “Buggy?” It could be a relative, co-worker or even a church member.

How would you handle them?

WRITER QUESTION: If this was a character in your WIP, what would be in their past that brought them to this place?

  1. Great question, Cynthia. I think this character would have a sense that they’re not important, created by a void of attention in their childhood. Their big family and workaholic parents (if this is an historical novel, they couldn’t help it, probably) had no time for them and their concerns.

Maybe this person was the tag-along kid whose siblings wished seen but not heard–or maybe not even seen. But his/her longing to fit in and connect meaningfully only got stronger. And now they’re bugging YOU.

A fun little exercise – thank you.

    Gail

  2. Good answer, Gail! I think there are so many ways we can go with this one.

  3. My take is that she (or he) was made to feel very important as a child, but now, as an adult, circumstances have prevented this character from having anyone close. Perhaps they moved away from family to pursue a career and never married or lost a loved one through tragedy. The character is very lonely and will do anything, even risk being perceived as pesky and rude, just to grasp as much time as possible with another human being.

Darn you, Gail. You gave my first answer so I had to come up with another one! LOL!

Thanks for making me think, Cynthia!

  5. Really, the way you describe that “bugger” seems very selfish and even enjoys bugging people. I would have no patience to listen and no guilt to cut short the conversation. But i’m not a writer!!! Good luck Cyndy/Ladies with inspiration in your WIP.
