Melting…

Unbelievable temperatures the past few weeks. All across the United States.

Definitely days where you felt like you were just melting away.

Our home has no air conditioning except for two of the rooms upstairs. Add to that the fact we decided to hold on to our CRV for just one more year, even though the air conditioning died at the end of last summer. “Surely we can make it through one more summer, ” I said to my husband. “I’ll be on a summer schedule at work so won’t have to drive in as many days, so I’ll take the CRV and you can drive the nice air-conditioned car.” Hubby happily agreed.

Fast forward to the last two weeks and learning how to cope with the heat.

  • All the windows down and racing through any yellow lights. Can’t stop or I’ll lose the breeze.
  • Long hair in one tight braid that still manages to get flyaways flinging out all over my head, giving a whole new meaning to the “windblown look.”
  • A plastic mug of ice in the cup holder that conveniently and thoroughly melts into a cold drink within minutes.

I’m learning how to live without ac in the midst of a heat wave. Feel like a character from a book. Will need to keep notes for my next story…

I’m wondering how people in the South cope with such high temps. What would you do if you had no air conditioning?

If you lose power during extreme heat?

  1. Sounds like you’re boiling in this heat, Cynthia.
We live in FL, and wouldn’t even consider being here without AC. I was raised in Michigan and we had two old fans we’d use in the living room if it got really hot. The recreation room, in the
basement, had a TV and sofas and it was always cool.

Honestly, when we were kids and raising ours, we’d be outside in all kinds of weather. It’s just at my age now, I’m noticing quite a difference. My 88 year old mother doesn’t like AC, and does fine down here and in MI each year. I hope you stay cool, Cynthia~ Blessings.

  2. Diane,
We’re normally okay with fans because we live in the country and it usually cools down enough at night to air out the house. But even the nights have been hot so our house temps are in the 80’s – ugh. Gets so stuffy and zaps your energy. Tonight it is finally cooling down and tomorrow should be even better – thank God! I agree with you, I think the heat bothers us more as we get older. I remember playing outside as a kid in all kinds of heat. Now, not so much : )

  3. We have AC in the house and in the cars – so we stay inside a lot when it’s this hot! Tennessee tends to have some hot days in the summer and milder days (normally) in Spring and Fall.
I know we lived through days hot and cold when I was growing up and made it through somehow when there was no air! Maybe we spent a lot of time in the shade…

  7. I’d never thought that I’ll appreciate the low 80s as cool! It has been horrible. The only difference between us & Florida is that at least in Florida they get to enjoy the winter & not cope with snow & ice. Let’s pray for a mild winter… and that the remaining summer may not return to what it’s been like.

  8. Elaine,
Yes, hoping and praying that August will be the perfect summer month for us. With a lovely fall and mild, snowless winter : )
