Are you drowning…in paperwork?

You wake in theย  morning and wander towards the kitchen for a caffeine-jolt only to come to an abrupt halt. With a dawning sense of dismay you view the towering stacks of paperwork cluttering your desk. Surely it didn’t look that bad yesterday. Perhaps some evil elves slipped in during the night toting trainloads of papyrus and dumping the whole caboose on your innocent desk. Sound familiar? It’s time to Divide and Conquer!

  1. Separate into groups. Writing. Finance. Personal. Yes, the writing pile may be a tad overwhelming.
  2. Plan out 10-15 minutes every day to work on one group. Yep, just one at a time, please. Toss or file away piece by piece in proper folders.
  3. Keep it simple, stay focused on the job and be consistent.
  4. Success! Before long, you will have whittled down at least one portion of your paper problems.

Please share a comment with any tips or suggestions on taming the paper monster.

  1. I love organization, but I’ll have to admit to being overwhelmed at times, especially with items I dislike heartily. lol

  2. Carole,
Yes, I hate the feeling of being overwhelmed. A sure signal it’s time to stop ignoring it! Hope this helps with the motivation to start small.

  3. Oh this is one of my big problems. I’m an Admin Asst by day and so, like the plumber who doesn’t plumb at home, I don’t like to even THINK about paperwork when I’m at home. The result? A giant, chaotic mess.

Much as you’ve outlined here, I decided I need to tackle it a few minutes a day.

    Only….

Well, every time it comes time for that “few minutes a day” I remember something else I really need to do. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

So I’m still working on that “stay focused and be consistent” part….

  7. Cynthia, this is such a good plan and one I’ll put in practice when I tackle my “file pile.” I also find it helps to be broad in my file categories. Ages ago, I kept seperate foldrs for the electric company, cable, etc. Though I still file insurance papers in separate folders (life, health, auto), most other statements go into one folder titled by the year. Before archiving it, I go through, shred most (since they’re also available now online) and only keep the “must saves.”

  9. I know just what you mean, Cynthia. Just yesterday, I finally went through and got rid of all the “junk mail” I know I will never or don’t plan to ever read!

Now I have my “to be filed” stacks. Next step is to get the paperwork into the files!

  11. The older I get the longer I put off that end-of-year clean out. Your advice is timely. Now, if I could just make myself open that 2012 drawer…:-)
